Summer Practice Sessions

Summer practices run every Wednesday at the Parkinson Rec Field and everyone is welcome. Practices run from 06:00 until around 07:30 and the clubhouse will be open for refreshments on Wednesdays as well.

Abby Recap

Now that was a battle! Cold, wet, and muddy, not even a great day for ducks but rugby, oh yeah. It was great to see Greg and he brought a buddy (Brian) and Dr K brought out another (Shawn?) and we had 16 so three spares. Good thing too as it seemed we couldn’t keep our heads out of the way. May be it was the heat of the battle, I don’t know. We lost Dean early to a gash on the cheek, then Gord took a cleat to the head (your still good looking buddy) and then Bobby broke his nose. So three down and no more spares but we still had 15. Our pack had an awesome game and played them pretty even. They created some breaks in the backs and took advantage of them. They owed us a whooping after their visit here and they gave us one. I’d like to congratulate everyone on putting up a great fight against a younger (they have one 50+ player), faster team with a lot of spares. There was no quit on our side and we battled till the end so hold your heads high. And they are good hosts and put on a great spread (nice having a chef to prepare your meals – and he hooks). So all in all a pretty good day even though we lost. And no snow on the drive. But start planning for their return visit here. Overall score after three games, we are up by two. So lets make sure when they come up that we work on that spread.

Next Game vs. Originals

We are going to Abbotsford on Sunday to play the Originals. We know they are going to be gunning for us as they haven’t beat us yet so I say let’s keep it that way. Let’s make a strong commitment to get a strong side with spares down there to give them a good game. And it is the last game of our fall season so even more reason to come out and enjoy and then we all have a few months off to rest and recuperate our injuries.

So far confirmed we have Dr K, Dean, Chris, Mike, Ollie, Garth, Mark K, Kasper, Steve D, Ian C, Blaine, Shawn, Gord and myself. I know we can count on the regulars but it would be nice to see the rest as well.

We are playing at 1:00 at Exhibition stadium in Abbotsford. The vans will be leaving the clubhouse at 8:00 Sunday morning. Chugger and Kasper are picking them up (Mark, if you don’t mind Kasper would like to split off the driving so may be you can help him out). Anyone wanting to be picked up in Westbank 08:15 at Tim’s let me know. We are now down to 14 as Steve D can’t make it so if you know anyone that is itching for a game we could sure use them.

Take the Clearbrook exit north to MacClure (right) to Trethewey (left) and you’ll see it. I can’t find the exact directions but Trethewey turns into Haida and the address is 32444 Haida. To get to the clubhouse just head back to the Clearbrook exit. Just before the exit there is a Chevron. Turn Right and then Left on Mercantile Way and it’s right there.

West Kelowna vs. Penticton

An exhibition game took place October 30 between Penticton and a group of former MBSS (West Kelowna High School) Rugby Players. The very young West Kelowna team came out running hard in the first half and managed a Penalty kick by Nathan and a try by Tanner. Penticton scored one try in the first half and the West Kelowna boys had a 10-7 lead. In the second half Penticton found their legs and punished the young West Kelowna team scoring three unanswered trys winning the game 24-10. The West Kelowna team enjoyed the game are looking forward to some more games. Thanks to Bobbie and Vernon Guy for helping the young guys out, Graham for reffing, and all the guys that helped with the Hosting afterwards.

The Okanagan 3rd div league (currently Vernon and Penticton) could potentially expand to 4 teams with West Kelowna and Merritt joining the league next year.

Snowcaps Recap

So another great day for rugby! The ground was soft (may be too soft) and the sun was shining for kickoff (we must have brought it as it wasn’t very nice on Saturday or directly before or after the game). So 15 Vicars walk on to the field and at the end of it all 15 Vicars walk off. And to a man I say great game and that’s the way to stick into it. Dirty knees, shorts, and jerseys were the norm as the guys fought hard. Their numbers were only slightly better so at least they weren’t subbing on a whole new team every quarter. And we did keep it close. But as Bing said, that’s the first time in ages that he played a whole game. And the same goes for the rest. No spares so pacing and a lot of heart. Nice to see Mike Roberts out and Rick smith who we haven’t seen in too long a time. Kudos to the guys who played out of position. Shawn and Bing took their turn at prop and I locked so you know we didn’t out size or over power them. But it was fun and if it weren’t for a couple unlucky bounces, well wouda shouda couda. We were outscored 4 to 2 but great effort. We all earned our beer that day. See you in two weeks.

Next Game vs. Snowcaps

Update

The weekend is shaping up. We have 2 cars going down that plan on taking in the Lions game as well (weather permitting). Car 1 has Buck, Garth, Colin, & Rick S. Car 2 has Gord, Shawn, Mark H, & Ian A. Kasper, Mike R, Mark K, myself, and Bob’s friend Scot will be down there. So that leaves Blaine (pilot), Chris W, Jim W, Bobby and Bing in the van. So as you can see we have no spares and two seats left in the van. It would be nice if someone would fill them and give us a couple anyway. We had 25 guys out at the Koots game, how can we be short now?

Here is the latest.
We leave a little early to make a 12:00 kick at Klahanie. That's the best the Caps could do and I think it will work out fine.
Play the game and have a fast and furious hosting and head over the 2nd Narrows bridge to the Lions game 2:00 kick-off.
( we will probably be a bit late but that should be OK)
The game will be done at 5:30 +/- so if we want we could do a team dinner in Chilliwack or Hope.
Your thoughts please. My preference is the Greek place in Hope.
I've made arrangements for a group of ticket in the vicinity of one of the corners ( the entire mid part is sold out) they are $40 - $10 discounted from the normal $50.
I need to see $ from those interested on Wed. Oct. 20. I need a min. 10 persons to order the discount group.

Now I know the norm is that we rent vans ( usually 6 per) with the club picking up the rental and the boys picking up the gas. Since the rentals are over $100 each van, plus the inconvenience of pick-up and drop-off, I submit to all that it might be better to car pool and have the club reimburse each 4 seat car or truck with $. ( even at $60 per carpool vehicle is cheaper/better than the rental.) The boys still pay for gas which would be marginally more for the car pool scheme.
Is that OK?

Old Koots Recap

What a wonderful fall day. The sun was shining and the sky was blue and there were bodies everywhere enjoying a great day for rugby. The Crow’s had a big hosting and the Koots came up with a bunch of guys and there was a huge number (for rugby anyhow) of spectators out watching the games. Our game with the Koots was a beauty if you liked good straight up running with lots of even better tackling. Even guys like Frank had trouble breaking off more than a few yards as they tackled very well. And after the game they paid a like compliment as none of them could get loose either. It took until well into the 4th quarter before we (Garth) were able to squeak one over and that was it for the scoring. They got down to the doorstep a few times but we managed to keep them out all game so congratulations to our swarming defense and congratulations to everyone that played (Vicars, Crows, and others) that day for a most entertaining day. And thanks to the kitchen and bar workers for topping off the day. We had great numbers on Saturday and we hope to see you all out again soon. Oh yeah, our next two games are on the road. See you in the vans.

Next Game vs. Old Koots

Just received an email from Chris Ptak and he has said that the City will be opening up another field on Saturday. So the Vicars game will run the same time as the Crows 2nds game. Sounds like a lot of great Rugby and fun set for Saturday. Cheers and see you at Parkinsons.

Gents, sorry but Seattle is unable to make the earlier times and the Crow's are not in a position to force them. Considering the 5-6 hour travel and that the BCRU has said that Men's games are set at 1:00 and 2:30 on Saturday the Crow's unfortunately can't change there game time.
The Crow's have also accommodated Seattle and the 1sts will be playing at 1:00 and the 2nds will be playing at 2:30.

Ebb Tide Recap

So it sounds like I missed a good one. It’s great to see Dr K back on the pitch as well as Shawn after a long break to nurse injuries. And Willie too. And Chuck B, Ron B, and Jake also put in some time on the pitch. I heard they had a solid bunch of guys out so its good to hear we had the guys to match them. We won 5 – 2 but I hear it was a very spirited hard fought match so congratulations to all who participated and we’ll see you at the next game. And if someone that was there wanted to add to this…………….

I did want to add a couple of things to our great victory over the Ebb Tide....

1) What a great job by Kevin and the gang again with the food...awesome!! We really did a great job of hosting again - everyone got plenty of cold beer and plenty of hot grub.

2) The support on the sideline was cheering loud and proud and thanks to Buck for running touch, he even tried to help Willie out when he kicked the ball dead and goal and tried to give us a 5m lineout!!

3) Our lineout was looking good despite the conditions - great job by Ron B throwing in and Bobby for taking alot of lineout ball and even stealing a couple. We managed to drive the lineout a few times and push there scrum back .

SOB's Recap

First of all thanks to all the players that came out for the game on the weekend. It was a good hard competitive game, all of the players on both sides played a good hard clean game. The Vicars managed to pull out at 2-0 victory (maybe 3-0). Kevin score 1 try (maybe 2) and had a number of long runs, Mark H. rumbled in for another tripping over the 2 yard line and falling in for a try. Mark K. was moved to the forwards and a had a great game making piles of tackles, (Although he almost knocked out our Steve, when he missed a SOB tackle and hit Steve in the chops). Bill Lang, how is your nose, rumour has it was Oli’s head that did the damage. Hope it’s not too bad and we will see you tomorrow and at the game on the weekend.

The game against the EBB tide this weekend will be a 3 pm at Parkinson on Saturday. Please try to arrive at least 45 min before the game so we can get the line-up set before kick off. Please respond if you will be playing on the weekend so we can make up a team list.

Also a Reminder to get everyone out for Buggers tomorrow at 6 pm. There will be some refs and we will be trying out the new touch rules as per below.

Midway Weekend

Don't know if I missed it or not, but I didn't see a report about the "Mingle in Midway"
Buck and Dean did a nice job providing the Vic family with another wonderful memory.
We had a great golf gig in the morning and even though the links proved challenging, some of the boys managed some terrific trick shots. Easy as pie to knock a squirrel off a log but can you hit a high voltage power line on request !?!?*
Thanks very much to Kevin for his work putting that gig together.
The rugby was great as well with the Vics pulling out a "last minute" "come from behind" win against the Koots and Koot sympathizers.
The tubing was great too!. That was a fantastic way to cool down after the rugby. The water was cool but not cold and the trip was just the right amount of time ( about 2 beers for Dean and I ran out a bit too early.... again ) Jenner was a real sport to brave the trip and the walk over the rocks what with him having a bum leg and all.
The beer & BBQ was fantastic - special thanks to Garth for the grill work, and thanks to all for bringing the feast.
The Pub was great. I don't know if it has heritage status but it had the feeling of one of those old frontier taverns. AND right across the road. Like RIGHT across the road!!!
The music was great as well ! Lot's of singing and strummin and pickin. "Bleeding Thumbs" Dean is real Marathon Man with the guitar. He could have played all night if we let him.

We are planning on holding this years AGM on July 17th at the clubhouse with the party to follow likely at Frank’s. The party starts at 3:00. Bring your lawn chairs and salad and a cooler full of ice and your favorite beverage. And the club is also picking up some chicken for those that prefer.
What I would like to know is if anyone out there is interested in stepping up to an executive position as there will likely be a couple openings. To volunteer your name for a ballot you must have been a member in good standing (paid dues) for the 2009 – 2010 season. We will try to have an election scrutineer set up by Wednesday who will work towards collecting your names and the position you are seeking.

Evergreens/ Burnaby Tourney Recap

I’m sorry that I have been a bit derelict in my getting the game reports out. Let’s go back to the Evergreens/Legends. It was another beautiful rugby day, cool for the game and warm for the beer drinking after. Does anyone remember the score? Does it matter? It was another fairly dominating game for the Vicars. We may not be the youngest team but our forwards can match anyone and continually get us backs enough ball to do some good. Do you remember early in the season when we were dominating games but just had no finish? Well, we seem to have found our finish. The Vicars do a great job on defense supporting each other and swarm tackling when needed and on offence we are starting to punch it in on a regular basis. I guess it took a while for the backs to gel as we’ve had a few changes but we’re looking good now. Let’s keep it going! And Aaron, 2 games and 2 tries, impressive. Keep it up. Allan, great work at scrum half. I think the score was 5 – 1 for us.

And the year end tourney. It was a struggle but we did mange to get a full squad of Vicars (16) there for this one. And the scheduling could use some work as we never knew when we were supposed to be playing or drinking beer but it was a pretty good day. It didn’t rain in Burnaby so that was a good start. Some of us didn’t arrive in time for our first game and so we paired up with the Old South Westers and played the Twits and lost a close one 3 – 2 I was told. So we wont talk much about that game. Our next game was against the Evergreens/Snowcaps in a 50+ match. (note: they did a good job of mixing and matching teams to support each other. It was a good way of getting to play with and chat to some of the guys you usually play against.) Since we are all pretty much 50+ that to us was a normal game. We took that one 4 – 0. Our last game was against the NOBs from Seattle. Big young, strong American footballers. This time we did import a couple players form the Legends and Evergreens We scored a couple from in close but most were from long (mid-field) runs as we continued to bust through their defense. We won this one 6 – 0. So a combined score of 10 – 0. A good day I’d say. We tackled well and showed a lot of speed and finish. Sounds like Vicars rugby!

ALL IN ALL, A FITTING END TO A GREAT SEASON. Keep coming out on Wednesdays as we run all summer. And let’s keep our fitness up as there is a rumor that we will once again arrange something with the Old Koots (thanks Tim and Dr K), possibly in July.

Weekend Update

As of right now we are still on this weekend for Saturday at 1:00 so bring out your boots. As a bonus this weekend we are clearing out some inventory and will have our blue and gold Vicars jerseys on for $40. That’s a great savings so if you need one jump on it.

And for next weekend in Burnaby we are still short a couple bodies but they will pair us up so no worries. What we need to know is if you would like to stay over. It sounds 50/50 so there will probably be one van coming back and a few will be staying. If you are on my list and planning on going let me know which side you are on. We are looking into some hotel info and details will follow once I have some numbers.

Next Game vs. Evergreens

I’m still waiting to hear from a lot of you. And for game confirmation but as it stands now we are playing the Evergreens/Legends on Saturday may 29th at home. We had a great turnout and a great game our last outing so let’s try to follow it up. To date we have Frank, Ron, Dean, Bobby, Blaine, Ian, Crash, Kasper, Bill, Mark, Aaron, & Shawn. As you can see we need a lot more. Add Steve D, Kevin, and Don.

And I know the tourney in Burnaby is still far away (Saturday, June 5th) but we need to get organized. Signed up so far are Frank, Ron, Bobby, Crash, Kasper, Bing, Chris, and Ian (and Peter???). I need your names (and ages) so they can place us in the right division. We are probably looking at the majority over 50 and I need to let them know. Add Dean, Peter, and Don.

Originals Recap

WOW!!! What more can I say. Wow, what a great day! That works.

I often get asked why I’m still playing rugby. You know, the bumps and bruises and sore muscles on Monday. Well it’s days like yesterday. Just like that miracle golf shot. It keeps you coming back. And I’m not talking about the score, at least not yet. Its about two teams battling out on the pitch, hard but clean and then getting together to enjoy a frosty beverage or two on a nice sunny afternoon. No winners or losers, just a bunch of friends enjoying the afternoon. So thanks to the Originals for showing up with a strong side on their first visit to Kelowna as members of the league. You did a great job and I think you fit the over 40’s mentality well and look forward to our next meeting. The score could be reversed and it would still be a good afternoon though it is certainly more fun to come out on top.

And so to the thanks. Thank you to Kevin and Karen and Nancy for the food. And to Mal for the pre-game tape jobs. You really help us out. And Trish and Tracey for selling the bottle draw tickets. And a special thanks to Cindy for running the bar all afternoon. We appreciate all your help. And to all our fans who showed up to cheer us on. It’s fun playing right out in front of the deck though we probably wont enjoy that again for a while.

But the biggest thanks goes to the Vicars who all showed up with their game faces on. We new Abby was young and big and that we had to come out ready. And we did. We have come out at other games with the same intensity but couldn’t find the finish. Today we found it all. Having everyone show up was probably the biggest contributing factor. It gave us a few spares and also allowed for our more skilled positional players to lead and inspire us. The passes and ball control was truly a thing of beauty. As was the rucking which helped us win the majority of the ball. It’s way more fun to have the ball on offence than it is to play defense. But we swarm tackled and stifled them at every turn when we had to. Bend a little but don’t break. So congrats to all and welcome to Aaron who played his first game in 10 years and managed a nice long run to score a trie. He then proceeded to celebrate by fertilizing the field with last nights cookies which is allowed…..once. The final was 7 – 1 by my count and we spread the scoring around nicely so let’s start thinking about doing it a gain in two weeks.

We have the Evergreens / Legends on the 29th and then the year end tourney on June 5th. Please make your plans early and get your names in to me. I really think we should make a strong effort to make it to the year end tournament in Burnaby with a strong side. If there are any changes to these dates I will let you know.

Next Game vs. Abbotsford

The Originals are confirmed for Sunday, May 16 @ 1:000 and are bringing about 20 guys. So it’s game on! Our numbers are looking good early but we still need you all. Right now we have Colin, Ron, Dean, Jim, Bill, Frank, Greg, Bing, Blaine, Mark, Crash & Kasper. We are hoping for nice weather and hoping to see some Vernon or Penticton guys for the game though none confirmed yet. So if you know anyone drag them along.

Twits Recap

Once again a great start and really good in the sets and control until we get a bit tired. Then we seem to start pushing things rather than waiting for them to set up. Then it’s a bad pass or a broken play that costs us a score. But none the less it was a very fun game with a lot of loose phase running by both sides (as well as some great tackling). Don’t know about running a big talented flanker type guy in the centers but Mark kept him at bay so thanks Mark. So lots of good things happened out there and it was good to see the Twits as we haven’t played them in a while. So very close and if we can put it together for a whole game…………look out Abbotsford.

Ebb Tide Recap

Once again another successful trip to Victoria. Not that we won but successful none the less in that we were there, we had numbers, and until we ran out of gas in the fourth quarter we played them even. They did borrow us a front rower so that we could play a push scrum so certainly that is the one area we are a bit thin at this year. Friday night most of the boys behaved within reason for Vicars and so most were only mildly hung over for the start of the game. Then we found our wind and it was 2 – 2 at the end of the 3rd. Then their numbers and subsequent speed took over. Everyone played hard and as usual with the Ebb Tide it was a fun close game played in the proper spirit of old boys. Buck was named man of the match with Frank a close second.

Then we were off to U Vic to watch the premiers. A game that saw a lot of tries with U Vic eventually handing James Bay their first loss of the year. The only downer is that they don’t sell beer at U Vic so a bit dry. Then back to the hotel for a couple and then the Canoe club for dinner and drinks (Romeo night out). Thanks Kevin for picking the spot as it worked out rather well.
Most headed home early Sunday. We hung around but it was a pretty slow moving day. I must say that they sure build some nice pubs in Victoria. I wish someone here would take note. The Bard and Banker is my new favorite as far as ambiance (I guess the $15 for two beers will help pay for it). So a fun trip and I look forward to our next game back there.

But now we have a string of home games so we really need to see numbers so that we can take advantage of being rested late in the game. So if you’re looking for a bit of a run come out, we’ll fit you in.

Shane Thompson – Canada’s Most Capped Sevens Rugby Player!

In retrospect, Shane Thompson looks like a rugby futurist. He has dedicated over 12 years of his life to the promotion and development of rugby sevens in Canada. With the Olympic Committee selecting Rugby Sevens as a new sport for the 2016 Summer Olympics in Rio de Janeiro, Shane seems to have known something the rest of us had overlooked – rugby sevens has a significant role to play in the future of our favorite sport. In July of 2009, the International Rugby Board (IRB) recognized five people in the world for their contributions to sevens – one of those selected was the guest speaker at our CORE Kickoff evening – Shane Thompson.

Shane began his international rugby sevens career as Canada’s hooker at the 1997 Dubai Sevens. Since then, Shane has received more than 50 caps representing his country on various international sevens pitches. In 2005, he became coach of our national sevens team, where he earned another 35 caps. Today, he is at the center of sevens development for our province.

For Shane, the attractions of playing international rugby are the people and the travel. "Before I made the Canadian Sevens team, I had been on a plane twice. Now I'm working on my third passport. Rugby is played all over the world and draws big crowds, which is exciting, and there are all the destinations and the people you meet along the way - it's great."

Please join us to hear Shane talk about the game of Rugby Sevens. Brief presentations will be also be provided by Matthuw Ronald-Jones, the Executive Director of the Canadian Rugby Foundation, and Doug Manning, Coordinator of the Central Okanagan Rugby Enthusiasts society.

About the Central Okanagan Rugby Enthusiasts (CORE)
CORE is a new local society, formed to promote the growth and development of rugby in the Central Okanagan, with a special near-term focus on rugby sevens. Its primary goal is to place at least one local athlete on the 2016 Canadian Olympic Rugby Sevens team. CORE also seeks to double the number of active rugby players in the region, create a sustainable infrastructure for excellence in the sport, and re-connect former players and other local rugby fans with the game they love.

For all of you who like myself aren’t a great fan of the artificial turf this is great news. And Buck’s right. We’re all right for Victoria but we really need to see you all out for our home games coming up this spring.

As some of you already know, I've suddenly been 'side-lined'. I have numbness in my hands from degeneration in my cervical spine. I am therefore, taking a year off rugby to try and get myself rehabilitated. :(

I have two reasons for sending this note. First, I would like to encourage everyone to get out and enjoy the game of rugby....while you still can. Life is short and shit happens, so don't wait.....sign up now!

Second, I would like to thank the entire Vicars community. You have made my 10+ years as a Vicar, thoroughly enjoyable and memorable. You have always made me feel like a family member and treated me with warmth and great generosity. Thank you and good luck on the pitch.

I have tentatively booked 8 rooms at the Travelers’ Inn City Center. Our usual haunt. The rooms are $69.95 for two beds and two people. There are singles available for those who are bringing a date. Hi;

A good day was had by all. We were short of players and they were even shorter, but I would like to thank the eight from Vintage who did make the trip. With the lack of numbers, the decision was made to play 10 aside, no kicking outside your own twenty-two and non-contest scrums (always tough for scrummers, it's their focus and they can't compete).
Thanks to Bing and Don for playing with the Vintage (it's always tough playing against you teammates). We had fourteen players but it seemed we had more on the limp, then game ready. Gord, Kevin, Weiner & Don, thanks for stepping up to play. Chris Ward, thanks for refing, it's always tough when everyone knows more then you do. Yes, even with the cold weather, we had fans (Nancy, Trish O., Dax, Kayd, Tom, Crash, Gavin, Steve, Ron, _*Jack Schneider*_ & the Seed Family), thanks.

We all need to take the time to say a special thanks to the Ladies for the food & clean-up and Crash and Jim for having the bar & clubhouse ready. Sometimes, as players, we're so engrossed in our game and ourselves that we forget the people who really make it happen.

SOBs Recap

Once again guys great effort and thanks to everyone that made the commitment to make this trip. A bit rainy but a nice soft, sandy pitch. And thanks to the SOBs for borrowing us a couple spare bodies to help out and allow for a push scrum. Always fun. Last week we started fast but couldn’t capitalize. This week we weren’t so quick off the mark by the end, even though they had superior numbers, we were holding our own and had 2 or 3 great opportunities to score and maybe tie things up. We don’t seem to be having much luck or a lot of finish right now but if we keep up this effort I’m sure it will come.

Congratulations to Gord for playing his first game as a Vicar. You made an impact and it looked like you were having a lot of fun so we’re glad to have you.

And which one of you big guys stepped on Bobby’s toe? He broke the damn thing and now we will be missing him for a bit as well. So Frank and Crash and Bobby get well soon and no more getting hurt out there by anyone else. We need you all to stay strong and in the game so we can get back on the winning track.

Snowcaps Game Report

So was that fun or what. It was raining and cool, perfect weather for rugby if you’re a traditionalist. I would prefer a bit warmer and then the drizzle would be OK. But any way, we had 17 guys who have had the winter off and were ready to go. And straight up rugby at its finest. We really took it to them the first half with good straight ahead rugby and good phase control. Unfortunately for us they tackled as well as we attacked and we could not push a score across. And they had an islander who was quick to capitalize on the couple mistakes we made (committing to many to the crash ball) But it was a hoot and bodes very well for the rest of the season. The only thing we might have to change once in a while is to try and run around someone instead of through them. The 2nd half showed a bit of our lack in fitness but we kept on the attack and played some nice phase ball but we need to work on our finish and capitalize on our opportunities. So all we got was our smiles and the joy of knowing that if we keep attacking like this that our day will come and we will push our share across. So job well done and hold your heads high. We showed up with a full team and played a good clean hard game. They outscored us 3 – 0 but the beer and food was good and territorially we controlled the game so I’m gonna call it a draw. For those of you that couldn’t make this game mark them down for the future. They’re a fun team to play and next time……….

Spring Season

OK guys, it is almost upon us and I need to hear from you. Our first game is in 2 weeks against the Snowcaps and we need to start getting the team together. So look at your calendars and get back to me. We need to see you out and don’t forget that we are running Wednesday nights at 7 so there is still time for a couple runs before our first game.

And don’t forget that we are going to Victoria in the middle of April. The game will be Saturday morning so plan your trips accordingly. I just booked my flights last week and they are still only $49 each way. Some guys have said they found them at $39 earlier so don’t wait to long.

And if you are good at planning and you know your schedule, let me know which games you are planning to make for the whole spring season as it will make my planning a lot easier.

The season is getting close and it’s time to start planning our trips. Our one big trip this spring is to Victoria. The game will be at 11:00 on April 17 so plan accordingly. There is a West Jet flight at 6 on Friday and I will see if there is a Saturday morning one early enough to get there in time for kick off. Let’s start talking it up!

Last Xmas party I was happy to share some Ponderoka wine with you. I wanted to say something that night but didn't get it out.
When I lost my house a number of years back I received a lot of help from the Vicars membership. I said my thank-you's at the time but I wanted to say them again. I won't forget your help and friendship..
As you know that wine was made from scratch . Jeane and I have put a lot of work into this and I'm pretty happy with the quality - and have had some good comments. ( The Pinot Gris is fine - it was a bit pinky caus I left the skins in the Must for a bit too long). I have lots of wine so if you are interested let me know.

Vicars Extraordinary General Meeting

I would like to thank you all for giving up your Saturday afternoon to come out and help us decide the direction we, the Vicars, should follow to help rugby grow in Kelowna. There is still a lot of work to do but I think we’re on track.

So now it’s time to toss politics and let’s get out and run. We are lucky this year to have the artificial turf field open so early. And the season is getting close. So if you haven’t been out yet we run from 7 – 8 on Wednesday evenings. We are looking for a good spring and being somewhat fit is sure to help so see you Wednesday.

There has been some confusion over what was discussed and decided at our AGM in August which has caused some dissension in the club. We, your executive, have decided to call an Extraordinary General Meeting to clear up these points and set our direction for the spring session. We ask all members in good standing to please attend. The meeting will be held on Saturday, January 30 at 1:00 pm at the clubhouse.

WOW! 92 for dinner! The men were looking dapper and the women….BEAUTIFUL! Thanks again Yorkie for the wonderful table settings and the 25 year history display. Your help on the weekend was greatly appreciated. The cricketers honoured Lincoln as the top boller and Frank? as the top batsman and then it was on to our awards. Lady Vicar of the Year went to Nancy Nichols, the Road Warrior was Jim Norris, Rookie was Shawn McMann, Good Old Boy went to Cyril Moore and Kasper was the Vicar of the year.

Thanks to Buck for the white and Grey Monk for the red dinner wines, the golf course for the hats and Dean and Glenda for the beef and cosmetics. Also thanks Don for your work on the Grade 8 jamboree. And Gavin, you look marvellous in RED. And Mickey and staff, another excellent job. So a nice end to the year, time to go to work to prepare for the new year. And there is a lot to be done so we’ll be looking for everyone’s help.

Many of you are aware that last week our President, Steve Hughes, resigned as our president. Steve had good reason to part the position, so I won’t get into that here.

Your executive met last night to resolve this issue and I am happy to announce that Ron Pelechaty has accepted the “move up” from VP to this position. As past president, I will support Ron as interim VP helping Ron in any way possible. I ask that you also lend your support to Ron in his new position…………..Congratulations Ron!

We also were forced to fill another position…that of Club Captain, due to the resignation by Jake over a month ago. Our choice for this position was Clare Cassan who accepted the position. We have decided that in games he cannot make, he would be able to choose a sub-captain on the day. Please congratulate Clare in his new role as Club Captain and strong voice on our executive.

What a great night! This was a great function attended by a wide variety of rugby and non-rugby folks who were there for one reason…………….RUGBY! Not Crows, Not Vicars, Not Juniors…..Just Rugby!

My hat is off to all who made the effort to support this event….you are on my Christmas card List!

Through the night there were standout performances by Doug Pettman – Rum connoisseur, Shawn for his camera, Leanna for her bottle grabbing technique, Dolman for his money and George Basran for his ….. just being there after a long lay-off. Jeremy, Big Jim, Chris Haynes, Don Bingham……..all important to our community.

On Friday November 20th at 7:00 PM the Valley Vicars are hosting a Rum Night at the Rugby Club House at PRC as a fundraiser for the Kelowna Crows Rugby Club. Tickets are $35.00 and are limited to 40 only, so reserve ASAP.

Valley Vintage Recap

What can I say? It was a snowy drive down and a rainy cold day on the pitch and we still managed to show up with 15 while our host Valley Vintage only managed 11. Kind of sucks, doesn’t it? So we played 10s which was better than not playing at all after driving down and meeting Dr K and Wiener and Peter down there. So we played and tried to keep warm and actually had some fun. Chuck was a standout and I would really like to thank all the rest of the regulars who made it down. This year has been a struggle for numbers but we have kept a strong core who has kept up our tradition.

Yorkie, Mark K, Crash, Peter, Kasper, Jim W, Ian, Jim N (not here today), Blaine, Steve N, and myself. You guys have risen to the call every time I put it out there, hurt or not. And today we were joined by Wiener, Chuck, Shawn, Steve, and Dr K all the way from Nelson. You guys are troopers, the best of the best cause without a core group pushing us (the Vicars) forward we are nothing. So thank you, it’s been a slice playing with you all season. See you at the Christmas party.

By the way, we lost 4 – 3 today but we out numbered them and looked way better (long sleeves and ties) so hold your heads high. If they would have had enough and we could have played a push scrum and 15s we would have kicked their ass and that’s the bottom line.

So it was put to me by a large ghostly type fella that we should dress up for the last foray of the season. The jacket would be overkill but any long sleeved shirt with a tour tie would be acceptable. (if you remember) I have a bunch of tour ties should someone need to borrow one. And there are still 2 spots available in the van if your game.

Final Game of the Fall

I know it’s fall and rainy/snowy out but as far as I can determine the game is still on this weekend on Sunday. We are still awaiting confirmation from the Valley Vintage but expect to go. The team thus far is looking good. We have:

Yorkie, Mark, Wiener, Chuck, Dean, Kasper, Jim W, Peter & myself with strong indications from Greg and Dr K

So a couple more guys and we’ll be over the top. I’ll try to firm up numbers tomorrow at practice and get to work on the vans.

It’s the last game of the fall schedule so we would like to see everyone who has played this year out to end on a high note so start planning now.

Crows Poker Night Fundraiser

I would like to thank Big Jim and the Illichmans and Pavel (I think these guys did most of the work but not sure) for putting together a fun evening last Friday. There were a few Vicars and a few Crows joined by a bunch of rugby supporters all out for a good time fund raiser.

The cards were fun, the food was good and the camaraderie and entertainment huge, especially after a few sodas as I don’t think there were too many pure poker players in the crowd. So Tommy’s lounge was rocking and when they decide to do it again sign up, it’s worth the donation to get out and have some fun with like minded individuals. And who knows, you might even win.

And just a reminder to not forget about the Rum night coming up on the 20th. I’m sure you will see some of the same faces you’ve enjoyed at the Scotch socials so come out and have a laugh.

Snowcaps Recap

First off kudos to the Snowcaps for making the trip down. It turned out to be a beautiful fall day for a run around the park. And the Vicars to a man showed their true colors and played a very spirited tough game against a very good Snowcap team. They had an ace, we had an ace and the game was very even with both teams really bottling up the other. Unfortunately they took advantage of an oops on our side and came away with a 2 – 1 win. It was a very enjoyable game to be part of and thanks to all that travelled to bolster our side, and theirs (Peter & Wiener) We’ll see them in Vicars colors against the Vintage. And just as good as the game was was the hosting after. The food and camaraderie was great and most hung around for a long time. Even the odd song got out so it truly must have been Halloween. So I hope they all had as much fun at the Corral later as we did at the clubhouse. As well as any of our guys who made it out. So watch for their next scheduled visit as I’m sure it will be another good day.

Originals Recap

Another day to add to the Vicars lore. And another nice day for rugby on the almost coast. The Originals were great hosts and offered many cold beers and some great food. We need to get a restaurant/caterer for a sponsor. Those boys eat good! But I don’t know if it’s the food or what’s in the water down there but I can tell you those boys are big, may be even huge. Especially their pack (as big as any we’ve seen)….but our guys weren’t intimidated. Not even when we scouted over their 20 + guys at warm up and noticed that only one was wearing black shorts. Everyone else was in white ranging from 38 to ~45. And us with our 3 reds, 12 blacks and only 2 whites. They were shaking in their boots, or at least should have been. We knew we were in tough and so that’s how we approached the game. Keep it tight, tackle and run and we actually controlled the field position for much of the 1st half. A few too many penalties in a series in our end led to their first score. But we came back with a nice individual run by Greg. And were pressing in their end again when we goofed up a bit and they ended up with a break away try. But we came back again and it was Greg again who finished it off. And I’m proud to say we never let down, tackled hard and managed to keep them out the rest of the way. Things got a bit chippy and I think that they were a bit pissed that a bunch of old buggers could give them so much trouble. One from each side was actually sent off for a bit of a rest for some extracurricular activities but no harm done. We started with 17, finished with 15 after a couple knocks and came away with a hard fought 2 all draw which sits much better with us than with them I think. But as I said at the beginning, they were gracious hosts and all that was left on the field and so this trip to Abbotsford will rank two thumbs up and thanks to all the guys who made it happen.

So gentlemen, it’s once again time to venture out. It’s been 4 weeks and I miss you. Including you tired tourists. We have a game against the Abbotsford Originals this Sunday at 1:00. Since they are a new team in the league I feel it is very important for us to make our commitment and make it down.. After practice tonight I have a lot of question marks but I’m sure they will all be there Sunday. We are planning for a couple vans to be leaving the clubhouse at 8:00 and Westbank at ~8:15. And we are looking for more bodies. As of now we have Jim W, Ian, Ollie, Don?, Bing?, Chuck?, Garth, Blaine, Willie?, Sean, Colin, Mark K, & Kasper. Dr K, are you rested? May be you could grab Paul? Or Ken. And to the Salmon Arm boys as well. Are you ready for a game? And Yorkie is yet to rise from the dead. So get your e-mails in to me and I will book the vans tomorrow. The directions to the field are below.

Abbotsford on Sunday and a 1:00 kick off means we don’t even need to leave that early. So let me know who can make it and which tourists will be energized enough to head out on the road again.

Japan Tour

Somewhere I lost the fourth game report but let’s move on to the fifth and deciding match as I have deemed it a tie to this point.

After a couple days rest I am delighted to say everyone will be dressed for today’s game after a few guys have missed a couple to recover from injuries. Again, not all will be 100% (or may be none will) but will play none the less till the tank is empty. Tokyo is predicted to be a very strong club in Japanese old boys so we will see what happens. We are playing today’s game at a private retreat owned by an advertising agency. They sure play rugby at some nice fields over here. You will have to see some pictures of the grounds and building. Very impressive. We have agreed today to play 20 minutes against their over sixties and then two 20s against the rest. They have more than enough red shorts for a side and probably 25 or more young guys for the 2nd half so guaranteed to be a long day, especially for our red shorts who have played more rugby than any of us. I don’t know if I mentioned it earlier but their red shorts play full contact when playing against each other so the games are very tough.We were a bit slow off the mark in this one and no one seemed committed to playing today but we did come a way with a 3 – 1 victory so a bit of a cushion going into the second game as the score is cumulative.

In the 2nd game they played very tough. We tried keeping it tight and crashing and trying to use our size to our advantage (though they had a few healthy boys themselves) but were unable to dominate as both sides seemed determined to win this one. They had some very fast backs in this one and we were on our heels and trailing 2 – 1 for a bit but manged to put a nice try of our own (beautiful support all the way out and back in again) together and though it was up and down the tackling was good and the game ended in a draw. So the tour was over and overall I think we won 3 – 2 in my opinion. Yeah!

But then we decided we hadn’t had enough rugby in the last 16 days and decided to play 10 minutes of overtime just for fun. We sent off all of our ailing guys and had to borrow 2 players from them to make 15 and so we played another hard 10 minutes and still no one could score. So a draw it was and off to the showers and beers.

They had a nice ceremonial tea party set up to entertain the ladies while we were in the showers though I’m not sure who was more entertained as the ladies had a tough time with this ritual. But it was a nice touch and overall the ladies probably scored bigger than the guys in the gifts and knick knacks so the hostings were fun for them as well.

And another fantastic meal though this time it was more traditional and we had to sit on the floor which was quite difficult for some including myself. But another beautiful day of rugby and food and drink. I’m sad to see the tour end but I’m tired and sore and look forward to being home again.

As a side note we went to a professional game Friday night and watched Honda get hammered by Suntory. George Gregan was the starting scrum half for Suntory so some very entertaining and fast ball.

I would like to thank the organizers for setting us up with such a good holiday. Colin Lee, Jim Wright, and Cris Ward did a lot of the work and of course the main push came from Kasper. Chris wrote a little Japanese poem that says it all about Kasper

Ebb Tide Recap

Sorry gang for the late game report. And for the fact that it might be a bit short. Just swamped with work and trying to get ready for the Japan tour.

Let’s start with saying it was another beautiful Okanagan day. The Crows played first and managed a draw in the 2nds and a win in the 1st div (please let that be right) Our game was a bit delayed due to circumstance but the Victoria guys were there in force and ready for a good tough match. Both teams had a compliment of about 20 guys so lots of spares to keep the game fresh. We were again not the largest side the Vicars are used to posting but a scrappy lot. Welcome back to Ron who helped secure our front row and pull the pack together. And to Dr K for once again travelling to make our side complete. He truly is a road warrior. We started strong but they tackled well so the game didn’t really seem to have much flow. Both sides wanted to keep it in tight. And both sides played well. Yorkie kept trying to take the loose balls and sell his dummy but they weren’t going for it. And Bubba came out for a run and managed to crash through for a try. Mark K scored the other on a nice support run when Greg made a break so we were looking good. And then the wind came up. And someone forgot to tell them that old boys don’t kick. They kept pounding it down and gaining field position and eventually it led to their tieing try. And so we ended in a 2 all draw which for them was a victory as we have had their number for a while.

So a good game followed by another successful hosting. The weather has really been nice to us as both the Vicars and the Crows have enjoyed a couple good hostings on consecutive Saturdays. Our clubhouse rocks and it was nice to see everyone including a bunch of the Ebb Tide guys stay around to enjoy it. Thanks to the ladies who rallied together to put on a good feast and look forward to doing it all in October at our next hosting. And remember, we are way to Abbotsford next so let’s welcome them to the league in true Vicars fashion.

SOB Recap

Now that’s how a hosting should go. The clubhouse was filled to bursting and the beer fridge was refilled twice. So it was super busy but we now know that we can do it if we all work together. The cricket boys had games all day, we had the SOBs and the Crows played two against the Scribes and we all survived. As Cyril said, “it’s great to see the clubhouse full” cause that’s why it’s there.

So to the day. Let’s start off by saying the Okangan weather was outstanding. It was our first game of the fall schedule and it was nice to see all the regulars out. I know that I can always count on you. But I have to welcome one of our regulars who hasn’t been out for a bit back. Ollie was banged up in the same tourney as Garth and has been out for a year so it was really nice to see him back on the pitch. And the ageless Jim was back out running around. But the red shorts stud this time has to go to Colin. I think he played the whole game (hot day) doing all the lineout jumping (Bobbie, where are you?) and making some great tackles. The pack was solid as ever against a very tough SOB side who has always had a good pack. It was great that we could play a contested scrum as it’s been a while and Dr K was getting restless. Marshal, a new prop, pleeeaase be only a minor muscle strain as we really want to see you back soon. Greg, we missed you in the spring and you reminded us why. You had an awesome game directing the backs around the field. The forwards really appreciate seeing the ball being advanced in a positive direction after all their hard work to get it for us. Mark H, great to see you back as well after time off to heal. May be we found a new spot for you to play that utilizes your skill without having to run as much. George and Barry, great to see you. This is the area that we have been addressing for a while and it’s great to see it starting to come together. What I’m talking about is the Crows/Vicars transition. George, I hope the shot in the coconut will not deter you from coming our again soon. I hope to see you both out again this coming weekend against Victoria. And Ray in the centers, welcome. And Villie, are you a regular yet? So cheers to all our usual dozen or so regulars and to the 6 or so whom we hope to soon call regulars. No road game till the middle of October so we have time to lure you in.

And to the results. There are no losers in Old Boys rugby. Both teams played a clean hard fought game, no extracurricular shit and both teams enjoyed the day. But we did outscore them 3 – 0 so hats off boys, one down, many more to go.

The Crows also enjoyed a very successful day winning both their matches (2nd and 1st div) handily so the season is looking very positive. And I don’t know how the cricket went but I hope the home town boys did well.

Our next game is next weekend against Victoria as I mentioned above so plan your day. We will be playing on Saturday again but this time the Crows will be playing their two games first and we will be looking at around a 3:00 to 4:00 pm kickoff. I will keep you posted as the details are worked out. Please start sending me your names if you can make it and I will get them off to Jake so he can start setting the team.

The one area where we can improve for next weekend is in the clubhouse. As I said we all need to pitch in but I saw Jim A and Jim W doing most of the work behind the bar with help from Nancy. Let’s help pick up the empties and may be help out behind the bar next time.

If the schedule holds true it will be the first of 4 hostings this fall so we’re looking good. Add in that my old Edmonton club is looking to come up this fall so we are trying to set up a big Halloween day of rugby and fun. So money in, boots on, get out and run!!!

First the good news. A big thanks must go out to Buck and all those involved in our first of what we hope will be an annual event. The golf night was a lot of fun and got a lot of people together and we managed to raise $660 the is earmarked for the Crows as a first step in our commitment to keeping the rugby community in Kelowna thriving. Everyone involved had a good time and we need more events like this to help bring us together and to help rugby grow. And as we all know it takes money to run a club so I hope this helps.

And a bit of bad news. Our hopes of getting a team together for this weekends SOBs tourney has fallen short. The timing is bad. The Crows are away on a mystery tour and a lot of our guys are previously committed. August is a very busy month and we have decided not to participate in this weekends tourney. If anyone wants to still go I wish them luck but I suggest they first check with the SOBs as it sounds like we are not the only club not able to make it and attendance might be thin.

Which leads to more good news. Yorkie has arranged another day with the Cricket club. This time instead of playing softball we will be playing Cricket. Yorkie has arranged some good stuff and so I encourage anyone not to busy on Sunday to make an appearance. The plans are for the day to run from 10:00 am till 3:00pmWe’ll play some cricket and hang out and I’m sure there will be some good eats as well so if you can come on our and support Yorkie’s Internationals.

I’m away for the weekend so good luck to the travelling Crows and all who come our for the Vicars to have some fun as well.

Golf Report

09/10 Season

We had our first exec meeting the other night and I think things are looking fine. We are looking at 4 potential hostings which will be a nice change. Other noteworthy points are that dues will remain at $175 for playing members and $50 for those who just want to come out for a beer or a little run at practice as a social member. As usual no pay no play and they are due before the season starts in Sept.

Some of you may have seen our 25th anniversary book. They are available for sale for $80. We have a few in stock now but will be placing an order for another shipment once we get some names. Golf Night

I've booked 5 consecutive T's starting at 5:00 Aug. 7 at both Michealbrook and Mission Creek. That is probably the easiest way, Remember it is only 9 holes. That is 40 golfers and I reckon we should get that. 20 or more old boys and about 20 or fewer Crows.

I'm happy to see Rocky get on board and I've asked Tom I. to round up Bubba, Tim, Greg, and more. There are some others as well.

We need to see a list of names from the Crows ASAP and we will be set.

Nelson and AGM

Hello Everyone!

It was a great weekend in Nelson and all you said was true Ron!

I heard a fair amount of talk about the upcoming AGM, the aging of our members, Japan tour and relations with the Crows. I thought about a lot of that talk and have a few ideas that could be discussed at the AGM:

I have been a Vicar for 4 years now but in that short time I’ve seen our team age significantly, our travelling and hosting numbers of players decrease and the number of games we actually play decrease as well. Our hair is getting greyer, our shorts are more black and red than white and our competition is definitely leaving many of us standing & watching their young speedsters flash by. Here are a few suggestions that may remedy this in the short and long terms.

To address the current Vicars numbers issue, a dependable and consistent schedule would result in more consistent higher player turnouts. We should:

1. Elect a very strong Fixtures person. Someone who is stubborn and will not allow other teams to chester us and pesky to ensure we get enough players to field a travelling team for every away game.

2. After elected that Fixtures person needs to ensure that we play consistently (twice a month during the “season” , maybe even on specific weekends like 2nd and 4th) and have “landmark dates” that we can shoot for every month or year. We know we always host the Vintage on Good Friday, it’s easy to plan our schedules around that, so let’s try to get yearly dates for other teams as well. It seems that the schedules sent out by the league change each year. As the most “away” team, we need to have a strong voice in scheduling so that our members can plan their schedules and holidays around specific dates. It would be great to be able to plan mini-vacations around rugby games. For example: try to get traveling dates every year for October to Victoria or Nanaimo, Easter: Host the Vintage, Week 2 of July go to Old Koots, Koots come every Labour Day Weekend etc.

3. Schedule non-league games vs Old Koots, Calgary, Edmonton, some local 3rd Div teams, in case the league does not schedule us twice in one month from Sept-Nov and Mar-June. We can then plan ahead and play games with some of the above. We live in a destination resort for Albertans…let’s use it! If they can’t come, let’s play some local games with 3rd Div teams from the West Kootenays and Okanagan.

To ensure we have a consistent long term “feed” of players coming into the Vicars we should promote the type of rugby we play and the type of club we should be (welcoming and a great group of guys). Any old or new animosity that occasionally flares up between the Vicars and the Crows needs to be addressed quickly with a goal of “What can we do to remedy the situation?” rather than “Who’s fault was that?” It’s hard to attract players to a club that bitches about anything. If our major complaints are against our main feeding club, the Crows, how can we attract them to play with us when they turn 39+? To promote more harmony, we should try to schedule more of our home games the same days as the Crows home games. Lots of people would be there to watch and there would be more use of the clubhouse, and it would be under more stringent (Vicars’) supervision. We’d also make more money for my suggestion below with less chance for costly damage etc to occur.

Many players who go out to play with the Crows do not return for a second game or practice. I believe this can be changed by providing another option: 3rd Division team(s). There are a lot of kids playing high school rugby. While some of these can make the 1st and 2nd Div Crows when they graduate, many are intimidated by large numbers of players, intense competition or by the need for what they perceive as high monetary and/or time commitments. There are also older players who cannot afford the time needed to commit to a heavy 1st or 2nd Div schedule. A 3rd Div team could address their rugby needs.

We should start small by sponsoring one 3rd Division “Developmental Team”. This should be promoted in the schools by a Youth Development Person. They should practice at the same time and on the same field as the Vicars for part of their training. We should sponsor it with a specific amount of seed money over their first and or second years to get things going (help with their budget for uniforms, insurance help, union dues etc.) until they can get on their feet.

The mandate of this team(s) would have to be clearly developmental. It should be focused on kids to improve their skills to move into the upper divisions and for older guys so that they get to understand what “social” rugby can be like. It should not be a place for the keen regular Crows players to come out and help win all the games.

I believe that events like the softball-cricket matches, Dai-Dobbs, hosting or attending Old Boys events like the PANORU beginning and wind up tourneys each year, major tours to Japan etc and mini-tours to Nelson and Victoria all do wonders in promoting good will and make the Vicars a better club to belong to. With our participation in these types of events on a more consistent basis (same date or time frame each year or group of years), more players will join and the workload will be spread out among a larger group of members.

And the Opposing View...

Hi guys:

I just want to take this opportunity to make a few comments about the "test" between the Vicars and Old Koots from this past Saturday. In all aspects it was a great day of rugby that was followed by an equally great social afternoon/evening that was enjoyed by both players and supporters. Congratulations to Loren and all of the guys and gals that helped him put this all together. The game itself, (although it got off to a rather inauspicious start with a red card in the first 5 to 10 minutes: Skipper, ya gotta remember this is Old Boys :-), and Yorkie should have been warned not to try his little niggles with the least likely member of the Old Koots to let it pass.... but in true Old Boy spirit the Vicars' captain (Blaine Graf) just told the ref to let Skip sit out for a few minutes to cool off and then he could come back on), was well played by both sides with lots of good runs and hard tackling.

All tied up at half time... this seems to happen with almost all of our games, the Vicars took the opening 2nd half kickoff all the way to score a try: our forwards must have had the sun in their eyes! Having got that misfortune out of the way it was pretty well all Old Koots from there with 4 (or was it 5?) unanswered tries and Mr. Red Shorts himself, Tim Comishin, punching (more accurately rolling) his way in for the last try.

To Greg Haydu: The Vicars and Old Koots were both impressed with your control of the game, calling just the right amount of infractions to let us all catch our breaths. But in all seriousness, you did an excellent job on the day.

To Loren Kozak: Thanks again for all of your hard work in getting this event off the ground and an especial thanks from me for your kind words at the dinner. You have to remember, though, that we both helped to start up the Old Koots, I just did most of the phone calling, so you deserve recognition for that too.

To Ken Foot: Great job as captain and excellent work, as always, around the scrum and in the open field.... thanks for the nice set up to start off the scoring!

To all our new West Kootenay brothers/recruits: Thanks for coming out and I hope to see a lot more of you in the future... hopefully, we'll be able to get a return match with the Vicars in Kelowna this fall.

To the East Kootenay guys who made the trip: There weren't many of you but I appreciate seeing you guys again and thanks for the effort to get over to Nelson.

Kevan: hope all is well with you and the Mrs., that cab that you called to come and get you at 10:30 must have sat outside the bar for 3 hours. Blaine: if I don't see you before then, hope you have a great time with the Vicars in Japan.

To Ernie and Huey (who never made the trip): The Wednesday night before the game I ran into an old friend at the Vicar's clubhouse after Silly Bugger: a real blast from the past... Shawn McMann. He made the trip up to Nelson to see all the old guys and was very pleased to meet up with Knife and Skipper, but he was really looking forward to seeing you guys, too bad. He played in his first rugby game in 13 years and didn't do too badly; I think he's hooked again.

Old Koots Recap

What can I say? Another hugely successful weekend in the Kootenays. (aside from the final score)

Starting with the golf on Friday. A beautifully kept challenging (have they never seen flat ground??) course. Even riding that course seemed long. We ended up with 7 Vicars and 4 Old Koots (and a couple rider/walkers; Karen and Cindy) so good on you Kevin for arranging for 3 groups to go out there and be beat up by the course or at least in our group. If you’re ever in Castlegar with some time for a round it’s well worth it but take the cart unless your nuts. Just driving up to the course will give you a hint. Oh, and it was hot! Fun Fun! Then to Finlay’s to meet up with the rest of the gang and have a couple refreshments and some dinner and swap some stories. A very full day so off to bed to rest up for the game.

Add Sean from here and Scot, Brent, and Dr K rotating in as our props. Thanks a million guys. Also Nancy, you’re the best! And to our fan club: Garth, Buck, Al, and all the ladies. It was great to see you all there supporting our cause. So our numbers were good and we would need them as the heat was rapidly rising. It was shaping up to be a scorcher so get started as early as we could so we could get out of the heat and have some beer. It was a hard fought affair with both teams showing signs of brilliance in a very see saw affair for the first three quarters. And the short field was a bonus I think but you could never tell where you were and more than a couple guys tried running through the end zone before putting down the ball. So both teams were very even until our lack of game shape started showing. In the beginning we were stealing their put ins. In the end we were some handsomely dressed (those new jerseys do look good) pylons. So they ended up on the upper end of a draw. The important thing was no serious injuries and an enjoyable game. And the camaraderie grows. Thanks Greg for a good job calling the game and keeping both sides honest and the bickering to almost none existent.

Then off to a little back yard hosting for a bit of grub and some refreshments. A guy has to stay hydrated when it’s this hot out. And in the shade! And then back to town where the gang split to any of the many choices for a nice dinner. Nelson really is a nice choice for this event as there are so many shops for the women to do some browsing and shopping and then all the nice little restaurants for dinner.

Sunday! Quiet, a bit of breakfast and some browsing. A quiet drive (nobody speeds any where near Christina Lake I hope as they are way to busy with the speed traps) And then the Prospector Pub in Rock Creek for a great burger and some hair of the dog. And then zoom and we’re home. I hope everyone had a great weekend because I sure did.

Cheers to all the organizers for a job well done and we look forward to returning the favour when the Koots travel here.

Tourney Recap

Rust, rust, rust….. It was very obvious that our season this spring has left us just south of game shape. But I think we all had fun. A couple of the coast teams have done some good recruiting and so when the fall season rolls around we will have to get our heads into it if we are to compete. They may be younger and faster but we are older and wiser. Any ways, it was a beautiful sunny day with a lot of good rugby and a few cold beers so I’m glad we stepped up and went and proud to say we did all right for a bunch of guys thrown together. Mark and Clare pounded all day. We are used to playing with a much bigger pack and a lot of guys played out of position. Kasper propped, Crash hooked, Bing and I played lock the last game, like I said…..A WHOLE LOT OF FUN.

SO CHEERS TO THE LADS THAT MADE THE TRIP.

OK, we have a team or at least we are going. We have two vans and will be leaving the clubhouse at 7:00 and the Westbank Tim’s at 7:30. Kasper is driving one of the vans and myself the other. And if Clare wants to ride with me he call’s shotgun as he said he would drive on the way down which would be bonus.

John L and Jim W will be down there so that leaves the rest of us to pile into the vans (and we can take a car if we have to). Bing and Bobby are as yet only on the “hopefully” confirmed list so we have a team and I see a great day ahead.

Spring Schedule

OK! Another scratch this past weekend…..are you all loosing interest? We have three potential fixtures remaining that take us through to mid July. I guess we need a vote to determine if it’s worth the effort to organize these.

1. May 31……Closing Tourney at Snow Caps. Down and back on the Saturday. I’ll even drive a van and cheer you on!

2. June 13th ….likely won’t happen but if we find another old boys side to play in the Sunfest in Penticton, it could be a go.

3. July 11th … This I do not want to miss. Our trip to Nelson. No sense moving on this unless we get some participation.

So…..by way of a STV (single transferable vote…...in light of the impending election) please reply to Ron (ronpelechaty@shaw.ca) which ones you are committed too so we can get a head count.

1 = Snow caps, 2= Sunfest, 3= Nelson.

You are quite right - It is utter nonsense for the Twits to try to chester under the circumstances they have. The Twit leadership most likely has no interest in making the trip and is refusing to muster a gang. This is a real disrespect to our club and we should not put up with this. Good move to go directly to George Sim right away, he may be able to help to get the Twits to make good their responsibility.
I remember several years ago the Vintage called me to chester a visit the day before a fixture. A number of decidedly intense phone calls later, and the game was on and the Valley showed with spares.
My message is - don't fuss - FIX!!

I just received word that your club is afraid to drive up here on the 29th because there’s a skif of snow on the Coke. The game is a week and half away do you not think the snow will be gone by then? It could be 15 degrees and sunny?!!!! We played last weekend in Vancouver “in the snow” and drove both ways in the snow. Nothing to be scared of. I would ask that you re-think this decision and make the trip. The least you could do would be to offer another date to do so although it looks like your schedule is pretty full to the end of the season.

It’s becoming painfully obvious that Vancouver clubs no longer are willing to travel here or anywhere there is a chance of hitting suspect weather yet we continue to put out an effort to make EVERY GAME!! The league is dying a slow death if this continues.

Adding 38 year olds has really help hasn’t it!

Legends Recap

Now that’s what I’m talking about. Snowing, cold, crappy drive, & Vicars on the road. 22 of them to be exact. It sure feels good to have those kinds of numbers so we can keep slotting fresh legs and lungs in and out. And it showed. And then add Chuck and Dean to our always powerful pack and it’s a wonderful thing. Congratulations to the Legends and the East Side Gents for coming out in numbers as well and for providing some very tough opposition. So when’s the last time you played a game of rugby in downtown Vancouver in a driving snow storm. Unbelievable but true. The cold and wet conditions made for a very sloppy (forwards type) game. Possession and keep it simple and drive straight ahead. No flash and no fancy passes. And after enough reminders during every possible break we finally started doing it and came away with a well deserved 3 – 1 victory. We didn’t blow them away but we controlled the game when we had to and defended very well.

And congratulations to our two road virgins. Chuck and Dean were both a force and glad to have them on our side. And they both came away with a nice token from the hosting at Connaught park so I look forward to seeing them out both at home and on the road more often. So a great day for Vicars rugby and special thanks to all the drivers in the vans and on their own for braving a very shitty drive on the way home. We really need to address this early season scheduling as an April / May season would be much more to my liking. And easier on the nerves.

On a side note please remember the driver is responsible for the van but it would be nice if the rest of the boys (clowns) would help out a bit and keep the cans in a bag and remember: Spillage is a finable offence and will be dealt with in court. (Sooner than you think) And not every trip goes through Merrit.

Move to Kelowna

Hi Guys:

I don't know if this is good news or bad news for you, but I will be moving to Kelowna at the end of April. One of the pharmacy managers at Save On Foods in Kelowna has decided to step down and I will be taking his job. I'll be staying with my aunt for the first little while until I can find a place of my own. My wife will be staying behind in Cranbrook to sell the house and will come out at a later date. I'll have to find out what night(s) are practice nights and make a showing.

SOBS Recap

It wasn’t pretty. But there were some good signs out there for our first real run of the season. But probably the most notable thing from Sunday was that we aren’t the youngest or fittest team out there and so we need numbers. And that means all of you who weren’t there We managed to scrounge up a couple guys and ended up with 17. And that is kudos to us as a club as it’s hard to get your head around rugby when you are still shovelling snow. So do you think it’s Vicars pride or just stupidity that keeps us from taking advantage of the offer for some of their guys? We’re short in numbers and out of shape and we would still rather play with our own mates. GOTTA LOVE IT!

Thanks to the boys that did show (mostly road regulars) Dr K, Yorkie, Ron B, Peter, Kasper, Bobby, Mark K, Crash, Jeff, Tugboat, Steve N (glad to have you back), Clare (man of the match), and myself. And a special thanks to Jim Always for making a cameo appearance that lasted three quarters. (the stupid ass) and thanks to Mark and Jeff for getting in touch with a couple buddies who came out to round out our ranks. And speaking of cameos, next time someone comes out for a cameo lets make sure it remains a cameo and not let them stay on for the whole game. Jim took a hard hit that wasn’t necessary at that point in the game.

So they beat us but our scrummers still managed to kick their ass and push them all over the field (I think they were embarrassed) in the sets and the line-outs. So we still have it but need a few more runs for fine tuning. And for the 1st time I saw someone buy Yorkie’s dummy which allowed him to set up Tugboat for a nice score.

So a great start and a lot to build on for next time which will be here sooner than you think so get ready.

One down, many more to go. So we got out for a run today and it was great! Thanks Kasper, Buck, Tugboat, Blaine, Mark K, Steve H, Colin, Yorkie, & Ollie. I think we all saw what great shape we are in as the shortest run nearly brought up fainting and coughing up a lung. But it was a start and I hope to see a lot more of you out soon. And I hope for nicer fields to run on but for now it will do.

And so we hope to do it again on Wednesday. The plan is to meet at 4:30 at the city park oval. There is not much grass on it but it’s better than the goose shit on the grass field and they probably wont be on our case for running on a field that isn’t officially open. So Wednesday at 4:30 till dark.
